Mayors suspended unceremoniously
An attempt to stifle the opposition?
Pro-BNP mayors Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul were both suspended from their posts just as they were about to resume office. In a rather disturbing turn of events we have the news of two mayors from two very important city corporations – Rajshahi and Sylhet -- being unceremoniously suspended from their posts just as they were about to resume office. Both mayorshad regained their posts after a long drawn out legal battle for two years. Another mayor of Habiganj municipality was also suspended. The Comilla mayoral election gave us a slight hint thatthere is going to be political space for the opposition. Alas! The hope was misplaced. What is of concern here is that a large number of such suspensions have been directed towards opposition backed mayors, indicating a selective use of the two clauses of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009. Under these clauses a mayor or councillor, if charge-sheeted in criminal cases, can be suspended. But when such clauses are invoked to prevent elected representatives of particular groups from holding office while there is soft pedalling on criminal cases against others that are pro-government, it isevident that there is a mala fide intention behind the suspensions.Such discriminatory enforcement of the law indicates a deliberate attempt to quash the opposition at the local government level. This is very disappointing and disillusioning as such acts of political harassment undermine the foundation of democracy, rule of law and proper functioning of local government. The suspended mayors wereelected by the people who have put their faith in their candidates. It would be a travesty of justice to force them out of office by a clever application of legal measures that ruling party candidates seem to have immunity from. There cannot be double standards when it is a question of applyingthe law of the land. However, we welcome yesterday's High Court order that stayed the suspension of the Sylhet Mayor.
